Who We Are

EagleBots is not just a robotics team.

We are a formation environment.

EagleBots 13532 is an open FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team based in Iowa, built for students who want more than participation. We exist to form composed, capable, ethical builders by embedding engineering rigor, documentation, teamwork, and service into a living system that outlasts any single season or leader.

This did not happen by accident.

It began with a problem.

The Problem We Saw

Many students, especially homeschoolers, rural youth, and those outside traditional school pipelines never get access to high-level robotics.

The talent exists.
The curiosity exists.

But access, structure, and continuity often do not.

Even where robotics teams exist, performance can eclipse formation. Robots improve. Scores rise. But documentation becomes an afterthought. Leadership concentrates in a few individuals. Knowledge disappears when seniors graduate. The next year begins from scratch.

The result is fragile success.

We believed there was a better way.

The Decision

EagleBots was formed as an open, community-anchored FTC team that is not tied to a single school, this makes it so that any motivated student could experience real engineering, real accountability, and real growth.

We did not set out merely to build competitive robots.

We set out to build a system.

A system that would:

  • Teach students how to think, not just assemble
  • Preserve knowledge across seasons
  • Distribute leadership rather than centralize it
  • Produce calm, capable engineers under pressure

That decision shaped everything that followed.

Learning in Public

Our early seasons were not polished.

We were small.
We missed competitions.
We struggled with resources.

We tried copy-paste robot designs.
We leaned too heavily on a few individuals.
We treated documentation as something to complete after the “real work” was done.

Those approaches did not create durable growth.

So we changed the question.

Instead of asking:

“How do we win this season?”

We began asking:

“How do we build people who can win for years?”

That shift transformed the culture.

Engineering as a System

At EagleBots, engineering is treated as a system.

We adopted SCRUM, not as a buzzword, but as a cultural discipline. Meetings became structured. Work became visible. Accountability became shared. Progress was measured. Obstacles were surfaced early instead of hidden.

Documentation stopped being paperwork.

It became power.

Students record design decisions. They document failed tests. They compare iterations. They defend tradeoffs. They create a written memory for the team so improvement compounds over time.

Engineering is not a moment.
It is a system.

And systems create stability.

Reliability matters more than flash.
Calm teams outperform chaotic ones.
Deliberate iteration beats last-minute improvisation.

Our robots improved, but more importantly, so did our students .

Who We Are Becoming

EagleBots is built for students who are:

  • Curious but under-served
  • Intelligent but under-confident
  • Motivated but not yet formed
  • Ready for responsibility when trusted with real ownership

We do not reduce students to “helpers.”

They become builders, programmers, CAD designers, notebook authors, outreach leaders, and systems thinkers.

They learn to:

  • Define constraints before building solutions
  • Prototype and test deliberately
  • Recover from failure without panic
  • Explain and defend design decisions
  • Lead peers with clarity and composure

Before EagleBots, many students feel unsure of their role.

After EagleBots, they carry:

  • Technical confidence
  • Leadership fluency
  • Systems thinking
  • Belonging rooted in contribution

This transformation matters more than rankings.

Because robotics is not the end goal.

Formation is.

Formation Over Trophies

We compete seriously. We pursue excellence. We want to perform well.

But trophies are not our foundation.

Confidence grows when students see their ideas become real.
Leadership emerges when decisions are documented and shared.
Ethics form when safety and accountability are non-negotiable.

Safety is not optional.
Respect is not negotiable.
Budget decisions are transparent.
Work is distributed intentionally.

We are not building seasonal excitement.

We are building durable character.

Community-Rooted Innovation

EagleBots does not exist in isolation.

We invest in outreach because engineering knowledge should circulate. Students grow when they teach younger learners. Communities grow when STEM becomes accessible.

Outreach is not something we do when convenient.

It is part of who we are.

Service reinforces competence.
Teaching deepens understanding.
Responsibility builds maturity.

Innovation is strongest when it is rooted in community.

Many robotics teams reset every year.

EagleBots is designed not to.

Our documentation, workflows, and leadership structures are built to be handed forward. Knowledge does not disappear with graduation. Systems remain. Culture remains.

We are building something that can endure.

A repeatable, documented, ethical engineering culture.
